The content posted to Open Graphic Arts is free to be used by educators for educational purposes. We currently share access to the course materials developed for our own classes, access to public versions of our Canvas courses (Note:Not all content can been seen at the public level), and provide downloadable Canvas courses upon request (which does include access to 100% of the course content). Our OPEN work started with a desire to make all Graphic Communications courses at Salt Lake Community college free or low cost for all students once tuition and fees have been paid. This process began by developing resources, teaching materials, lectures, and recordings to be used in lieu of items requiring hard costs like textbooks, course supplies, and subscriptions specifically geared toward SLCC students. As our processes have expanded internally to include seven fully OER designated courses we have committed to streamlining our OPEN content to be more easily adapted by other high school, college, and university teachers. We are currently working to update all OPEN content to remove SLCC specific information like course numbers, mentioning project specific information within recorded demos and lectures, etc. In addition, we are in the process of formatting our comprehensive slideshow lectures into a more textbook-like format. The Art Truck brings exciting and accessible contemporary art created by leading local and national artists directly to schools and community venues along the Wasatch Front. Engage in learning about our current Art Truck installation by Carlos Rosales-Silva, a contemporary artist from Austin, Texas whose paintings photos, sculptures and drawings investigate themes of borders, diversity and identity. Growing up in various parts of Texas, artist Carlos Rosales-Silva had to reconcile his own identity — half Mexican, half American Indian — with that of his larger-than-life state. "Texas history is all about mythmaking" said Rosales-Silva, 30, who's in Utah this month with an art exhibit on wheels in the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art's Art Truck. Rosales-Silva, who is now living in New York but will forever associate himself with Texas, aims to examine identity issues of race and class and "filter them through formal art movements." He lists as examples Op Art (think Bauhaus) and Abstract Expressionism (Mark Rothko and others), as well as popular culture iconography. Take, for example, his "Texas Comanches" banner. It's a large red-and-white banner like one you would see in any high-school gymnasium. But this one reads, "Texas Comanches, State Champions, 1747-1865" the dates indicating how long the Comanches roamed Texas before white settlers ultimately defeated the native population. "A lot of my things have a sense of humor" Rosales-Silva said. "It's laughing to keep from crying. If you can make people laugh, you can get their attention." The Art Truck will be easy to identify as it drives around Salt Lake City: It will be wrapped in a 7-foot-high vinyl version of Rosales-Silva's diptych "Bringing Sexy Back." Virtually every activitiy in our lives is experienced through purchases, from bassinets to caskets Our landscape is studded with logos, brand names, and billboards - inducements to participate in a culture defined by the acquisition of commodities. This exhibit, Branded and on Display, examines the work of artists who explore the meanings and consequences of branding and display tactics in their responses to this pervasively marked environment. Entering the darkened Projects Gallery in the Salt Lake Art Center you are met with a wall-size projection of a serene underwater landscape that is suddenly displaced when a fully clothed man plunges into the water from above. Accompanied by a roar of sound and a luminous explosion of bubbles and turbulence, he slowly sinks with arms outstretched, his body limp and motionless. Rays of light undulate as streams of glowing bubbles ascend to the disturbed surface. Midway down, his descent slows and finally stops, his body remaining suspended in space. Is the man dead or alive? He does not move, but the water moves him. Very slowly, he begins to rise until he reaches the surface. There, air bubbles emerge from his mouth and he begins his involuntary descent again. He sinks into the depths and his body then disappears into the darkness. The landscape returns to its original peaceful state. Then, unexpectedly, the man plunges into the water again with a shocking explosion of light, sound and movement, as the video loops once more. "Behind the Lines" is an apt description for the Salt Lake Art Center's exhibition of Hall's drawings and sculptures. What happens behind, and indeed beyond, their physical presence yields the content of these works. Through his mixed-media drawings in particular, Hall endeavors to give form to his subjectivity, to literally draw it as he comes face to face with the objective world. The linear shapes, gestures, and contours of the drawings create complex infrastructures that embody personal states of innocence and discovery. They are insightful testaments to Hal's living int he moment. As transitory self-portraits, however, they ultimately defy containment of his expansive, ever-changing pursuit of knowledge. Battleground States brings together artists who critically engage with the discourse of visual culture and gender studies. Through video, sculpture, installation, and photography, these works explore ideas of how figuration and identity are connected. The exhibition begins with Utah artist Trevor Southey as his process of self-realization has made him an art historical pivot when discussing gender politics within the culture of Utah. The narrative continues by presenting generations of artists across the globe, leading the viewer along a path of self-realization in which concepts of coupling or completing the self are represented as spiritual quests. Battleground States analyzes the space between traditional gender duality by exploring alternative forms such as the third gender, a generally foreign concept in Western culture. In their non-Western roles, these alternative identities denote a space for possibility and transcendence. The exhibition moves towards notions of the “post-gender” as a way to better understand how our cultural diversities open up interpretations of a third space. Color conveys meaning. Blue is the color of things infinite--of the ocean and the sky. Without shape or line, unattached to any object, the color blue can make us feel space, freedom, distance, openness and continuity--abstractions rooted in thousands of years of equating the limitless with blue. To see color, we need history, science, myth, religion, literature, psychology and a great many other disciplines, for the meaning of color is deeply ingrained in the evolution of our collective experience and traditions. The exhibition explores the symbolic, emotional and purely formal nature of all colors by focusing on one color, alone: blue. Exhibition held in the Main Gallery space.
